SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Care with Fathers: Promising Practices for Working with Fathers Who Have Experienced Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 8\, 2025\, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM for the training session: Trauma-Informed Care With Fathers. This session is designed to equip professionals with promising practices for working with fathers who have experienced trauma. \n\n\n\nFathers who have experienced trauma often face unique and complex challenges. These experiences can shape how they show up as parents; often\, making it harder to express emotions or build trust with their children. The emotional weight of unresolved trauma can also impact their relationships and overall family dynamics. Without support\, these patterns can carry over through generations—but with the right tools\, healing is possible. \n\n\n\nThis training will dive into evidence-based\, trauma-informed strategies to effectively support these fathers\, foster their resilience\, and cultivate healthy family relationships. \n\n\n\nDuring this training\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\nGain a deeper understanding of the impact of trauma on fathers\, exploring how it influences their parenting approaches and interpersonal relationships.\n\n\n\nLearn practical\, trauma-informed strategies to create safe\, supportive\, and healing environments for fathers.\n\n\n\nDiscover five (5) concrete approaches to actively engage fathers in healing-centered and strength-based support services.\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. David C. Miller – Dr. Miller’s early years were a testament to his resilience\, a quality that has inspired many. Despite facing adversity\, such as bullying\, academic struggles\, and gun violence\, he overcame these challenges with the unwavering support of his family and teachers. \n\n\n\nHis passionate approaches to redefining manhood and masculinity have a profound impact on today’s society\, where so many men and boys are struggling socially and emotionally. He uses his academic training and innate street skills to lead healing circles with men and boys\, focusing on decision-making\, impulse control\, mental health awareness\, and managing anger. \n\n\n\nHe has spent the last few decades consulting with hundreds of federal\, state\, and philanthropic organizations. In particular\, his work has focused on strengthening fatherhood programs and creating meaningful engagement opportunities for boys. \n\n\n\nDr. Miller’s academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. in Social Work from Morgan State University (Baltimore). His academic research focuses on Black fathers as protective factors in children’s lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContinuing education credits are available for counselors\, psychologists\, and social workers. \n\n\n\nFor any questions\, please email Dr. Sylvia Huntley at shuntley@som.umaryland.edu. \n\n\n\nThis is your chance to build your skills and create real impact for fathers and their families. Plus\, you’ll walk away better equipped to support and engage dads in meaningful ways.
