SUMMARY:Maternal Mental Health Month
DESCRIPTION:May is Maternal Mental Health Month. It’s a reminder that the physical recovery from birth is only part of the story. Emotional health matters too. \n\n\n\nThis observance began when nurses\, parents\, and public health advocates started naming what they saw every day; postpartum depression\, anxiety\, and trauma being dismissed or missed altogether. The movement grew from the simple idea that caring for parents means caring for families. \n\n\n\nAcross the world\, rates of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders remain high. Many people still avoid asking for help because they fear being judged or brushed off. This month calls for better systems: consistent screening\, accessible counseling\, and workplaces that make recovery possible. \n\n\n\nSupport doesn’t always come from professionals. It can be checking in with a new parent and listening without fixing. It’s making sure care teams have time to ask real questions. It’s public policy that treats mental health as basic health. \n\n\n\nMaternal Mental Health Month asks communities to notice what’s missing and fill the gaps\, with resources\, with training\, and with time. Awareness alone isn’t enough. Change happens when care reaches everyone who needs it. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Upcoming Events \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n May \n \n 1 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM	\n	\n \n	\n Maternal Mental Health Month	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Aug \n \n 1 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n August 1 @ 8:00 AM – August 7 @ 5:00 PM	\n	\n \n	\n World Breastfeeding Week	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 1 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n All day	\n	\n \n	\n September is Baby Safety Month	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 20 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n September 20 – September 26	\n	\n \n	\n Child Passenger Safety Week	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 26 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n All day	\n	\n \n	\n National Seat Check Day	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n \n	\n View Calendar

SUMMARY:The Judy Center Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mainline Maternity Care and the Judy Center are partnering to bring maternal health education directly to families in the Featherbed Elementary community. Led by Cynthia Sparks\, RN\, Maternal–Newborn Nurse and CEO of Mainline Maternity Care\, this session supports moms during pregnancy and the postpartum period with evidence-based information and practical guidance. \n\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn key maternal and newborn care topics\, including:\n\n\n\nUnderstanding postpartum recovery and mental health\n\n\n\nBreastfeeding and lactation support basics\n\n\n\nSafe newborn care and comfort techniques.\n\n\n\nWhen and how to seek extra help.\n\n\n\n\nEach session provides a welcoming space for questions\, shared learning\, and connection. Moms who wish to receive personalized\, one-on-one support can schedule an individual consultation after the workshop. \n\n\n\nThis initiative bridges the gap many women face after hospital discharge\, ensuring continued care and learning within their own community. Having a nurse embedded in the neighborhood helps extend support beyond the delivery room; empowering moms to care for themselves as a whole (mind\, body\, and spirit). Because when mothers are well\, children and families succeed. \n\n\n\nEach session offers space for questions\, discussion\, and shared experience. Moms who want more personalized guidance can schedule a one-on-one consultation after the workshop. \n\n\n\nDisclaimer:\n\n\n\nThis program is exclusively for families affiliated with Featherbed Lane Elementary School (students\, parents\, or guardians). Registration is required via The Judy Center. \n\n\n\nFor additional questions you can reach out to: \n\n\n\nEmail: csparks@mainlinematernitycare.org

SUMMARY:Prematurity Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Every November\, we pause to talk about something too many families live through quietly\, babies born too soon. Prematurity Awareness Month is a time to raise understanding of what it means to start life in the NICU\, the challenges that follow\, and the strength it takes to get through it. \n\n\n\nThis month exists because prematurity is still a leading cause of newborn illness and death around the world. Behind every statistic is a family learning to navigate alarms\, feeding tubes\, and long nights of uncertainty. It’s also a story of skill; the nurses\, respiratory therapists\, and providers who work every shift to help these smallest patients grow stronger. \n\n\n\nWe observe it in November to honor the global work led by health organizations and communities focused on preterm birth prevention and care. It’s a chance to share what’s been learned\, where care still falls short\, and how we can do better\, from prenatal education and early intervention to family-centered NICU support. \n\n\n\nEven if you haven’t lived it personally\, this month is an invitation to learn\, support\, and speak up for preterm infants and their families. Real awareness starts with understanding that prematurity isn’t rare\, and that small voices need big advocacy. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Upcoming Events \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n May \n \n 1 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM	\n	\n \n	\n Maternal Mental Health Month	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Aug \n \n 1 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n August 1 @ 8:00 AM – August 7 @ 5:00 PM	\n	\n \n	\n World Breastfeeding Week	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 1 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n All day	\n	\n \n	\n September is Baby Safety Month	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 20 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n September 20 – September 26	\n	\n \n	\n Child Passenger Safety Week	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Sep \n \n 26 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n All day	\n	\n \n	\n National Seat Check Day	\n\n \n\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n \n	\n View Calendar

SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Care with Fathers: Promising Practices for Working with Fathers Who Have Experienced Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 8\, 2025\, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM for the training session: Trauma-Informed Care With Fathers. This session is designed to equip professionals with promising practices for working with fathers who have experienced trauma. \n\n\n\nFathers who have experienced trauma often face unique and complex challenges. These experiences can shape how they show up as parents; often\, making it harder to express emotions or build trust with their children. The emotional weight of unresolved trauma can also impact their relationships and overall family dynamics. Without support\, these patterns can carry over through generations—but with the right tools\, healing is possible. \n\n\n\nThis training will dive into evidence-based\, trauma-informed strategies to effectively support these fathers\, foster their resilience\, and cultivate healthy family relationships. \n\n\n\nDuring this training\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\nGain a deeper understanding of the impact of trauma on fathers\, exploring how it influences their parenting approaches and interpersonal relationships.\n\n\n\nLearn practical\, trauma-informed strategies to create safe\, supportive\, and healing environments for fathers.\n\n\n\nDiscover five (5) concrete approaches to actively engage fathers in healing-centered and strength-based support services.\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. David C. Miller – Dr. Miller’s early years were a testament to his resilience\, a quality that has inspired many. Despite facing adversity\, such as bullying\, academic struggles\, and gun violence\, he overcame these challenges with the unwavering support of his family and teachers. \n\n\n\nHis passionate approaches to redefining manhood and masculinity have a profound impact on today’s society\, where so many men and boys are struggling socially and emotionally. He uses his academic training and innate street skills to lead healing circles with men and boys\, focusing on decision-making\, impulse control\, mental health awareness\, and managing anger. \n\n\n\nHe has spent the last few decades consulting with hundreds of federal\, state\, and philanthropic organizations. In particular\, his work has focused on strengthening fatherhood programs and creating meaningful engagement opportunities for boys. \n\n\n\nDr. Miller’s academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. in Social Work from Morgan State University (Baltimore). His academic research focuses on Black fathers as protective factors in children’s lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContinuing education credits are available for counselors\, psychologists\, and social workers. \n\n\n\nFor any questions\, please email Dr. Sylvia Huntley at shuntley@som.umaryland.edu. \n\n\n\nThis is your chance to build your skills and create real impact for fathers and their families. Plus\, you’ll walk away better equipped to support and engage dads in meaningful ways.
